Acne and rosacea are inflammatory skin conditions with a major impact on the patient’s quality of life.
The therapeutic strategy is personalized according to the stage of the disease and the individual profile, including topical, systemic, or advanced dermato-cosmetic procedure options.
Acne has several types and, depending on its form, it manifests differently.
Hormonal acne appears predominantly in the jawline and chin area, being closely related to fluctuations of the endocrine system.
Papulo-pustular acne presents inflammatory lesions in the form of papules, small pink or red bumps, often painful, and pustules, commonly known as pimples, with a red base and a tip containing a purulent collection, caused by the accumulation of bacteria, sebum, and dead cells.
Comedonal acne manifests through open or closed comedones, blackheads and whiteheads, without visible inflammation.
Treatment options
Depending on the type of acne diagnosed, the dermatologist at Swan Clinic also decides on the type of treatment and technologies used to treat it.
There are several treatment options for acne, such as:
- Basic therapies, administration of creams, topical treatments, or oral medication, systemic treatment, to control inflammation and bacteria
- Dermato-cosmetic procedures, chemical peels for exfoliation and pore cleansing
- Light-based treatments, IPL technology or vascular laser are used to reduce active inflammation and skin congestion
When is a dermatology consultation needed?
A dermatology consultation is necessary when acne worsens, persists, or leaves visible scars.
Also, if several treatments have been tried without success or the lesions are inflamed and painful, the dermatologist can help identify the cause and personalize the treatment.
Follow-up visits
In order for the treatment results to be positive, respecting a regular frequency of follow-up visits is recommended.
During the initial treatment, visits are usually recommended every 4 to 6 weeks in order to monitor the skin’s response and adjust the doses.
Once acne is under control, a follow-up visit every 3 to 6 months is sufficient to prevent recurrences.
If severe adverse reactions to treatment appear, such as major irritation or excessive peeling, the consultation should be scheduled as quickly as possible.
Swan Clinic recommendations for the first consultation
For the dermatologist to be able to perform the consultation correctly, the face should be clean in order to observe the real redness, skin texture, or small comedones.
- Note down or photograph all the products you currently use
- Be prepared to mention which treatment schemes you have followed in the past and what results or adverse effects you had
- Avoid chemical peels or manual extractions 3 to 5 days before the visit, so the doctor can evaluate the natural state of inflammation
