Breast augmentation is a surgical intervention through which an implant is inserted into each breast, with the purpose of increasing volume, improving shape, and restoring the harmonious proportion of the bust.

This intervention has the role of improving body contour and restoring self-confidence, while maintaining a natural and balanced appearance.

When is breast augmentation recommended?

Breast augmentation may be indicated in the following situations:

  • Breasts with reduced volume due to genetic factors
  • Loss of volume after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Breast reconstruction after surgical interventions
  • The desire to improve the aesthetic contour of the body

About breast implants

A breast implant is a prosthesis made of a silicone membrane, filled with cohesive silicone gel or saline solution.

The latest generation of implants contains cohesive silicone gel, which maintains its shape even in the case of a possible rupture.

The choice of implant is made together with the surgeon, taking into account:

  • The anatomy of the chest
  • Tissue thickness
  • Lifestyle
  • The patient’s aesthetic wishes
  • Body proportions

If breast ptosis, sagging of the breasts, is also present, the doctor may recommend combining the procedure with breast lift for an optimal result.

Initial consultation

During the initial consultation, the surgeon evaluates the patient’s health status, analyzes the shape and tone of the breasts, discusses surgical options and risks, establishes the most suitable type of implant, and explains the type of anesthesia and the steps of the intervention.

It is important to inform the doctor if you smoke or take medication.

Smoking must be stopped at least 2 to 4 weeks before and after the intervention in order to reduce the risk of complications.

How the procedure is performed

The surgery is performed, in most cases, under general anesthesia and takes approximately 1 to 2 hours.

It usually requires hospitalization for 1 to 2 days.

In some cases, drainage tubes may be used for 24 to 48 hours.

The incision can be made:

  • In the inframammary fold
  • Periareolar, around the areola
  • Axillary, under the arm

The implant is placed either under the mammary gland or under the pectoralis major muscle, depending on the anatomical particularities.

Submuscular placement may reduce the risk of capsular contracture and provides a more natural contour in patients with thin tissue.

Recovery

In the first few days, adverse side effects may appear, such as swelling, a feeling of tension, or discomfort controlled with medication.

The scars are initially firm and pink, gradually fading over 6 to 12 months.

It is recommended to wear a special medical bra for at least 6 to 12 weeks.

Light activities may be resumed after approximately one week, while intense physical effort should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks.

Possible risks

As with any surgical intervention, breast augmentation involves general and specific risks, such as:

  • Capsular contracture
  • Hematoma
  • Infection
  • Changes in nipple sensitivity
  • Seroma
  • Implant rupture or displacement

Rupture of a saline implant causes rapid deflation, and the fluid is absorbed by the body.

In the case of silicone gel implants, rupture may be “silent”, which is why periodic check-ups are recommended.

Breast implants, pregnancy, and breastfeeding

There is no scientific evidence indicating that breast implants affect fertility, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

However, implants may influence the interpretation of mammograms, which is why ultrasound or MRI may be recommended in addition, according to the doctor’s indications.

Results

The final result becomes visible after the swelling completely decreases, within a few weeks.

Periodic check-ups are recommended for long-term monitoring of the implants.
