Thigh lift is an aesthetic surgery procedure designed to remove excess skin and fatty tissue from the thigh area, restoring firmness, contour, and harmony to the legs.
The procedure is frequently recommended after massive weight loss, as a result of the natural aging process, or when the skin has lost its elasticity and no longer responds to diet and physical exercise.
When is thigh lift recommended?
Thigh lift is recommended for women and men who present:
- Excess skin on the inner or outer thighs
- Skin laxity after significant weight loss
- Loose skin caused by aging
- Physical discomfort caused by skin folds
- Areas resistant to diet and exercise
The ideal candidate is a healthy person, with a stable weight, non-smoker or willing to stop smoking, with realistic expectations, and aware that the procedure involves permanent scars, positioned strategically to be as discreet as possible.
The procedure is not indicated for people with active obesity, major weight fluctuations, severe circulation disorders, lymphedema, or a tendency to keloid scarring.
Types of thigh lift
Depending on the degree of laxity, the following procedures can be performed:
1. Inner thigh lift
Recommended for moderate excess skin in the upper area, with an incision hidden in the inguinal fold.
2. Extended inner thigh lift
This involves both an inguinal incision and a vertical incision on the inner side of the thigh. This technique is recommended in cases of significant excess skin along the entire length of the thigh.
3. External or complete thigh lift
This corrects both the inner and outer areas and may be associated with buttock lift or abdominoplasty.
In many cases, the procedure can be combined with liposuction to optimize body contour.
Preoperative consultation
During the preoperative consultation, the surgeon will evaluate skin quality, the distribution of fatty tissue, medical history, and weight stability.
Preoperative tests are recommended, along with stopping smoking at least 2 to 4 weeks before the procedure and avoiding medications that increase the risk of bleeding.
How the procedure is performed
The intervention is usually performed under general anesthesia.
The surgeon makes the incisions according to the established plan, removes excess skin and fat, and repositions the tissues to obtain a firm and harmonious contour.
The deep tissues are anchored for long-lasting support and to reduce tension on the scars.
The duration of the surgery varies between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the complexity.
At the end, temporary drains may be placed, and the area is protected with compression garments.
Patients usually remain hospitalized for 24 to 48 hours for monitoring.
Recovery
During the postoperative period, swelling, bruising, a feeling of tension, and discomfort controlled with medication may appear.
It is recommended to wear compression pants for 4 to 6 weeks, begin early mobilization without intense effort, avoid demanding activities for 6 to 8 weeks, and maintain strict local hygiene.
Results
The results are visible immediately, but the final shape becomes defined after the swelling completely decreases, over several months.
The scars fade progressively over 6 to 12 months.
Returning to professional activity is possible, on average, after 2 to 3 weeks.
The results are long-lasting, provided that a stable weight and a balanced lifestyle are maintained.
Possible risks
As with any major surgical intervention, risks may include:
- Hematoma
- Seroma
- Infection
- Delayed healing
- Temporary sensitivity changes
- Asymmetry
Following medical instructions and choosing an experienced surgeon significantly reduces these risks.
