Lipomas are benign, non-cancerous formations made of fatty tissue, located under the skin.
They usually appear as soft nodules, mobile when touched, painless, and may appear on the trunk, neck, shoulders, arms, or thighs.
Although they do not represent a danger to health, they may cause aesthetic or functional discomfort, especially when they increase in size.
When is lipoma excision recommended?
Excision is indicated in the following situations:
- Progressive increase in size
- Pain or local discomfort
- Pressure on neighboring structures
- Repeated inflammation
- Aesthetic discomfort
Initial consultation
Before the intervention, the specialist doctor will perform a clinical consultation.
In certain cases, imaging investigations, such as ultrasound, may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis.
How the procedure is performed
Lipoma removal is a minor surgical intervention, usually performed under local anesthesia.
The procedure involves:
- Making a discreet incision at the level of the skin
- Complete excision of the fatty formation
- Aesthetic suturing for a scar as fine as possible
The duration of the intervention varies between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the size and location of the lipoma.
In most cases, the patient can go home on the same day.
Recovery
Recovery is quick and involves keeping the area clean and protected, avoiding intense physical effort for a few days, and removing the sutures after 7 to 14 days if they are not resorbable.
Mild discomfort, swelling, or local bruising may appear temporarily and usually disappear within a few days.
