Labiaplasty is an intimate surgery procedure designed to reshape the labia minora and/or labia majora, with both aesthetic and functional purposes.
The procedure is intended for women who wish to improve the appearance of the genital area or who experience physical discomfort caused by the size or asymmetry of the labia.
At our clinic, the intervention is performed using modern techniques, while respecting the principles of discretion, safety, and natural-looking results.
Why do patients choose labiaplasty?
Patients choose this intervention for functional reasons, such as:
- Discomfort during physical activities
- Recurrent irritation or inflammation
- Pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse
- Difficulty wearing tight clothing
Patients may also choose labiaplasty for aesthetic reasons, such as:
- Prominent or asymmetrical labia minora
- Loss of volume in the labia majora
- Desire for a more uniform and rejuvenated appearance
- Increased self-confidence and psychological comfort
How the procedure is performed
Labiaplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia, with or without mild sedation, as an outpatient procedure.
The duration of the procedure varies between 45 and 120 minutes, depending on the complexity.
The surgeon may use a classic scalpel or laser/radiofrequency technology, depending on the indication.
Types of techniques used
- Trim technique, which involves removing excess tissue from the edge of the labia minora
- Wedge technique, which involves excising a central portion while preserving the natural edge of the labia
- Labia majora reduction, for cases with excess volume
- Labia majora augmentation, through hyaluronic acid injection or autologous fat transfer, lipofilling
- Clitoral hood correction, through removal of excess skin for a harmonious contour
Before the procedure
For optimal safety, before the intervention, the following are recommended:
- Avoid anti-inflammatory medication and aspirin 10 to 14 days before the procedure
- Stop smoking at least 2 weeks before and after the procedure
- Stop oral contraceptives, upon the doctor’s recommendation, 4 to 6 weeks before the procedure
- Perform the recommended medical tests
- Schedule the intervention outside the menstrual period, as a general rule
Recovery
The recovery period is relatively quick.
Swelling and bruising usually decrease within 1 to 2 weeks.
Discomfort is moderate and controlled with medication, and the sutures are usually resorbable.
Postoperatively, it is recommended to:
- Avoid sexual activity for 4 to 6 weeks
- Avoid intense physical effort for 3 to 4 weeks
- Wear loose cotton underwear
- Maintain careful local hygiene
Most patients can resume their usual activities within a few days.
Results
The results become visible after the inflammation decreases, while the final shape is assessed approximately 3 to 6 months after the procedure.
The results are generally permanent, but may be influenced by hormonal changes, pregnancies, or major weight fluctuations.
Labiaplasty does not affect fertility and does not prevent a future pregnancy.
The functionality of the intimate area is maintained, and sensitivity is preserved in most cases.
The scars are discreet and, over time, become almost imperceptible.
Possible risks
As with any surgical intervention, there are minimal risks, such as:
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Asymmetry
- Temporary sensitivity changes
These risks are reduced by following medical instructions and choosing an experienced surgeon.
